When you keep your tyres in tip-top shape your car performs better. The tips below will help you stay safe on the road and ensure optimum fuel consumption.
Tyre Maintenance Tips
✓ TYRE PRESSURE – check your tyres’ pressure EVERY month
Use a reliable tyre gauge and make sure the pressure is what the manufacturer recommends. That information is on the inside of the driver’s door panel or in the owner’s manual.
NOT SO FUN FACT – underinflated tyres mean they wear faster, fuel efficiency is reduced, and the engine must work harder. Overinflated tyres give you a harsh ride and tyres will wear unevenly.
✓ TYRE ROTATION – this ensures tyres wear evenly
Rotate tyres every 5,000–7,500 miles.
Follow manufacturer’s recommendation on rotation pattern.
✓ BALANCE AND ALIGN YOUR WHEELS
Tyres that aren’t aligned properly wear unevenly.
Problems with your steering, like drifting, can mean your wheels need aligning.
Balancing your wheels extends the life of the tyre and prevents vibrations.
✓ TYRE TREAD DEPTH & WEAR PATTERNS – the legal tyre tread depth is 1.6 mm
Purchase a tread depth tester to make sure you get an accurate measurement at all times. Once the depth of the treads hits 1.6mm change them right away.
Uneven wear can also indicate alignment or suspension issues.
JUST SO YOU KNOW – the recommended tread depth that should be maintained is 3mm. This ensures optimal performance and safety, especially in wet conditions.
✓ INSPECT YOUR TYRES REGULARLY – check for any damage
Look for cracks, bulges, punctures, or embedded objects.
If you see damage to the sidewall or deep cuts, replace your tyre immediately.
✓ AGE OF THE TYRE MATTERS
Tyres older than 6–10 years should be replaced, even if the tread looks fine.
Check the DOT code on the tyres’ sidewall for the date of manufacture.
✓ AVOID OVERLOADING
Check your vehicle’s tyre load rating (it’s on the tyre or in the owner’s manual). When you overload your car this puts a strain on the tyres and can cause a blowout.
✓ DRIVE AS SMOOTHLY AS POSSIBLE
Braking suddenly and taking turns aggressively wear out tyres faster.
Avoid potholes and road debris, it will help your tyres last longer.
